S. Hadley, MA - Meriden, Connecticut

Sunday, October 1, 2009

After breakfast Michael drove to pick up their son Alex. Bettina, Jalil and I went for a nice walk to Holyoke University. It was a beautiful morning with nice fall colors. Bettina showed us around different departments in the school and the library. They even have a stable. Two horses were acting somewhat hostile. Young girls were competing - jumping, etc. We walked along the river and there we saw a tall bird standing on one leg - maybe a heron?

When we returned home, Michael and Alex were there already. Bettina cooked a frittata and we ate together. Alex was telling us what he had been cooking in his apartment. Afterwards, Bettina drove Alex back to his apartment and we came along. We did some sightseeing on the way. She drove through Holyoke, which used to be a mill town using the river for power. There were so many large brick buildings that were empty. Some were converted to condos. The city is hoping to bring computer business to the area to help the city survive.

We drove through the Birkshire Mountains. At the highest point there was a sign stating that a mountain higher than this would not be seen until South Dakota. We continued to Lee where Alex lives and dropped him off there. Afterwards we continued to Stockbridge - normally a busy tourist town with lots of leaf peepers but quiet now. We had some coffee and walked around, checked out a candle shop where I bought something for Haleh. It was too late to see the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Once back in S. Hadley, we thanked Bettina and Michael for their hospitality. They offered us to spend another night but Jalil had ants in his pants. So we drove to Meridan in Connecticut where Jalil had made reservation at Candlewood Suites. It had a whole kitchen, which we are not used to. So we cooked a whole dinner.
