Boothsbay to Ellsworth, Maine

10 24 09

After a huge breakfast in the recommended restaurant and after checking my e-mail on their computer, we walked around town. The sky was totally blue without a cloud. What a change from yesterday! At the dock, we observed a seagull eating a little crab with enormous energy. It bothered Jalil to watch the crab suffering while I was filming it!

We drove down St. George Peninsula further north with St. George river on one side and the Atlantic on the other side. The road passes by farmland, historic cemeteries and fishing harbors. We stopped at Port Clyde - a little fishing village at the end of the peninsula. We walked around the docks. Nearby there were two sea trucks used by the military to transport tanks per Jalil. There was a little market there and we went shopping for groceries. There were live lobsters in a tank with their claws tied with rubber bands. The town's fishing and lobestering economy is critical now and I saw a sign by the road encouraging people to buy lobsters to support the community.

On the way from Port Clyde we passed a library/city hall with an interesting statue of St. George and the dragon. I went inside the administrative building to ask about this statue, as there was no signs. The two women had no idea except that some local man had made it. It reminded both of us of St. Goran and the dragon in Storkyrkan in Stockholm. And the town was called St. George. So that is what we decided it was.

The road crossed Weskeag River and we stopped to observe the river that changes direction depending on the tide. It looks funny to see a river rushing backwards. In Rockland there is a famous breakwater with a historic lighthouse at the end. Jalil and I walked all the way out there in a strong, cold wind with wonderful sunshine. There were gaps between the massive granite stones which were splashed by the waves. "Now we will live for two more days", Jalil commented after our walk.

We reached Belfast by the end of the afternoon, and we walked around but it was freezing cold so we had some hot drinks and continued north along the coast. There were many more things to see but we ran out of time. I really wanted to see the Wyeth Center, the Puffin Center, and Thomaston but it did not happen. We did cross the Penobscot Narrows Bridge but it was getting dark and the observatory up in the tower was closed by the time we got there. Our goal was Ellsworth - a town close to Acadia National Park. Now an L.L Bean outlet was next to our motel so we had to check that our before dinner. Bought a yellow and a green top to stay warm in this cold weather. Then it was time for our lobster dinner. The sign had worked on me but Jalil was done with his lobster support.
